Audrey Hepburn is one of my favorite actresses of all time. Who can forget her, in her iconic little black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s? I certainly can’t. Audrey was born Edda Hepburn Van Heemstra in May of 1929 and started her career as a dancer and model before making it big in the movies.

As much as I love Hepburn’s constant beauty and grace on the screen, I find myself much more impressed with the actress offstage. Not in the manner most people are interested in the lives of today’s stars. I could not care less who she was sleeping with, or if she was drinking.

Audrey’s on-stage characters were always the kind of people that I wanted to meet. Whenever I watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s all I can think of is the amazing conversation that I would have with her character Holly Golightly.

While the image of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in her little black dress and diamonds for Breakfast at Tiffany’s has stood the test of time, not enough people realize that the character was actually a high-class escort.

Throughout the film, it is suggested that Holly is paid by wealthy men for entertaining them, and while it is not made clear whether or not she has sex with these men, it is undeniable that her character is not much different from the helsinki escorts of today.

Sex workers have fantastic stories to tell, and therefore I can only dream of how fabulous an afternoon spent with Holly Golightly would be! She would have so many anecdotes about her wealthy clients.

That is not to say that I would not have loved to have met Audrey Hepburn herself too. Everything that I have read about her makes me think that she might have been a truly inspirational person off-stage too. And it was settled for me when I discovered a quote of her’s about fairy tales. She said “If I’m honest, I have to tell you that I still read fairy tales and I like them best of all.”

I mean really, let’s consider. What type of person loves fairy tales? The type of person who hopes and dreams of the type of world in which those stories can come true. The princess finds her true love, and lives happily ever after with him. A world where people are kind and help you on your way…. that is the world of fairy tales.

If you can imagine a better world, you can begin to make one. So, go pick up a fairy tale, and get to work on your part.
