This is my second year participating in the Red Pump Project.  It’s a way for me, as a blogger to help raise awareness about HIV and AIDS.  The biggest part of the Red Pump Project is “Rock the Red Pump” National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, an event that occurs on March 10th.  This should be easy for all of you college students to remember.  It’s also the FAFSA filing deadline.  For all of my friends who are out of college, you’ll just have to put the date in your planner, I don’t have any other easy ways to remember it.

Why is it Important?

Now, I know all of you know what HIV and AIDS are, but I bet you don’t know how they affect your life, and the lives of those around you.  In America, someone is infected with HIV every 9.5 minutes! And women represent 27% of those diagnosed, with the majority of those being African-American (66%).

Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic (until 2005), over 86,000 women have died from AIDS and AIDS-related complications, and most diagnosed women are under 40.  As a matter of fact, in 2006, 39% diagnosed cases were teen girls, age 13-19.

So What Do I Do?

Wear your red pumps!  That’s right, it’s that simple.  Wear your favorite red heels, or if you don’t have red heels, you favorite chucks, or any other red footwear.  When someone asks about it, or compliments your shoes, tell them why you’re wearing them.  Simple, huh?

Now, if you have a blog and want to do more than “Rock Your Red Pumps”, you can sign up on their website!  They will provide you with banners for your blog, if you want them, and some basic information to get the conversation started.

This is an epidemic we can actually do something about, so take action.
