I loved making my Colette Mini Bloomers so much that I want to learn more about sewing clothes. To that end, I’ve picked up a copy of The Colette Sewing Handbook. My goal is to work my way through the entire book, learning some useful skills and techniques along the way.
I’ll be updating my blog as I work my way through the book. You’ll be seeing posts about the things I learned in each chapter, as well as the projects I completed with my new skills.
I’ve already learned quite a bit, just reading the first chapter. I now know what a French Curve is. I’d never even heard of one before. Which is funny, because I have one in my art supplies. I was completely unaware that it was for sewing.
I also learned that the old fashioned pin cushion I use – you know the tomato with the little strawberry on the end – has some cool features. That strawberry isn’t decorative. Apparently it has emery sand in it for sharpening needles. How cool is that?
I’d also never heard of a seam roll or tailor’s ham. Those, I don’t have, but they look like something I should pick up. It was also nice to learn that I should sew seams on knits with a zigzag stitch. This book is just full of useful information.
The first chapter also has some helpful step-by-step instructions on how to do some basic sewing techniques – things like sewing a dart and installing a zipper. I’m pretty thrilled with what I’ve seen so far. I can’t wait to get into the second chapter and see what I learn there.
