I’m super excited to share with you the backing I came up with for my Impromptu quilt.  I originally started with a lovely orange batik in 102″ backing width.

But after I brought it home, I remembered that I still had a bit of my painter’s canvas fabric I’d used as backing and a charm pack of Comma to work with. That meant that I could do a fun pieced back and save some of the orange batik for binding.

The design I came up with for my backing was a double row of offset charms with equal widths of painter’s canvas fabric on either side, next to the batik yardage.

The only problem I had with the backing is that the width of my leftover painter’s canvas is a couple inches shy of the width of the quilt top. To solve this, I’m planning to trim down the outside border on the front about three inches on two sides.  Who wants a square quilt anyway?

Have you ever had problems with your fabric being just a bit too short? What was your solution?

I love using a pieced backing, I always save left over parts from the quilt top to add some interest to the back. It’s like a bonus, 2 quilts in one! Love Comma it’s one of my favourite lines, and it goes so well with you batik.

Thanks so much! It was a lot of fun to do, and much quicker to piece than the back I’ll be sharing on Monday.
