Today’s #NaBloPoMo photo prompt is “Your Passion.”  It was tougher than I thought to choose one thing as my passion. I did finally narrow it down to a couple of things, though.

I absolutely love to quilt. The ability to create with fabric is amazing. And if there’s ever an apocalypse, my husband and I will have all the quilts we need.

And I love to read. Getting lost in other worlds is amazing.

My passion is cooking! I’m the sort of person who cruises the Asian supermarket (or any other) and buys something because it looks interesting…and then finds a way to use it. Sometimes I have to ask what the label says, though. 😉
I make my own chutneys and Indian pickles, curry masala powders etc. Love Japanese and Indian cuisine, though I’ve never made sushi at home. I’m not huge on fancy presentation and “plating up”–for me it’s all about the food itself, quality and taste.
Just recently I discovered through a friend who’s a biologist that there is a form of kefir made with water instead of milk, adding brown sugar and dried fruits such as dates or apricots to feed the culture. I had good success using chunks of peeled carrot to change it up a bit, so it ocurred to me to add some fresh beet. Worked, though less fizzy…but it also dyed my culture bright pink! LOL

I am really sold on kefir water–so far my favourite blend is dates and lemon, or ginger and carrot. You don’t have to eat the fruit, though you can–it’s there to make the culture work.

I am known as an “odd” cook, all my friends and neighbours ask me stuff. I have to make a batch of hummus for a church tea tomorrow, they’re doing a session on nutrition and no one in the congregation knew what it was or how to make it! I love hummus–you can use any lentil or bean you like if you don’t have garbanzos.

Hummus is amazing stuff, but the tahini is impossible to find around here, so I’ve never been able to make it myself. The things I cook are usually basic “meat and potatoes” style recipes because my husband doesn’t like international flavors. I can’t even get him to eat tacos or a basic stir-fry. Oh well, more for me when I make it.

If you can get unsweetened peanut butter (or make your own in a magic-bullet thing) that is a satisfactory sub. Not amazing, but satisfactory. Toasted Spanish peanuts, toasted sesame oil or peanut oil (about 3:1 favouring the peanuts), touch of salt. Blitz.

Unsweetened almond butter works, too. Just use half sesame oil and half olive oil in the hummus instead of all olive, to give it a bit of sesame taste.

See? I have no life outside the kitchen.

That’s ok. I appreciate getting to use your knowledge.

I’m pretty sure you could get tahin from Amazon in the US. Spain’s Amazon doesn’t sell grocery stuff. *sob*

I may try that. I never think about ordering things like this online.
