Do you want more books?

What kind of questions is this for a bookish person? Of course, I want more books! I’m friends with quite a few authors who are currently writing books so I’m looking forward to them being released – I might review them on my blog! One of my friends is hybrid publishing his book which I had never heard of before and it was quite interesting looking into how it all works. I always like supporting local authors and even make it a point to stop in at the local bookstore whenever I get the chance. My latest book haul was on our way back from a conference in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to check out any bookstores there, but I did get my husband to take me to the Half Price Books Outlet in Bloomington on our way home.

HPB Outlet Book Haul

I found myself two David Sedaris books I didn’t have yet, and a copy of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which I’ve been wanting to read for a while, and was reminded of at the Indiana Farm Bureau Young Farmer’s Conference we were attending.

Normally, when I purchase books, I’m purchasing higher end or special edition printings (usually hardcover), but being from HPB, these were all used. However, aside from The Omnivore’s Dilemma (which has some sticker damage on the front cover), they are all in very good condition.

Do you like to add books to your collection? Do you have a certain style of book that you prefer for your personal collection?

We are inordinately fond of picture books with good illustrations. For those, or for cookbooks which I intend to actually use, I want hardback in a good binding. It’s surprising (or perhaps it isn’t) how the quality of paper and bindings in physical books is so much lower than it was just a couple of decades ago. If what I want is just “the words” or it’s not a book I’m sure I’m going to adopt as a family member, paper back or ebook will do.

I “know” some people from the Amazon UK cooking forum (just their screen name, you know what I mean) who apparently buy cookboooks by the ream just out of curiosity. One boasted of having over a thousand cookbooks, and apparently bought six a month there for awhile. Unless she was just a plant, to encourage people to check out the multifarious links in her forum posts. (Who, Zon? Surely not!)

But what would I want with over a thousand cookbooks? I love to cook, but I only invest (invest being the operative word) in hardbacks of cookbooks I intend to use. And use. And use.

Is there a book you’ve always wanted and could never find? There’s one I’d love to have but it’s out of print. A lady I know lent me her copy for several months and I treated it like what it is–a treasure. I was honoured she would trust me with it.

That is a lot of cookbooks! I paired mine down before the move. I have 3 that I pull recipes from on a regular basis. They are all older recipe books in the 3-ring binder style. Then I have a small selection of community cookbooks, which are smaller, paperback, and spiral bound. These I keep for the one or two recipes in them that I use constantly. And I also have a collection of Alton Brown cookbooks, which are hardcover. I love them because they categorize by style of cooking (grilling, etc) instead of by main ingredient. Otherwise, I make use of sites like The Splendid Table. I would try EBay or Abe Books to find that out of print book.

I found the book I dream of on Amazon France (it’s a French book) but the cost plus postage is almost half of my weekly housekeeping allowance. Sigh. Can’t be done. Someday, maybe. Ah well, we all need dreams.

I want a few books like that. The Folio Society is a dangerous place.

I just googled Folio Society. You’re evil! *chuckle*

I’d tell you I’m sorry, but I’m really not. Occasionally I see some of these for good prices on eBay, but I’ve yet to click the buy button on any of them.

    Oh. What I did.

    I ordered that book.
I don’t know how to make links and stuff, but it’s the Vie en Images de Therese de Lisieux.

DH says it has to be my birthday present. My birthday is June 30.

    Fine by me!

That’s the one!! I’m not Catholic but Therese has always been a hobby (see also, obsession) of mine.
