What is your favorite villain in a book?

I recently read The Martian by Andy Weir, and that book reminded me how much I love it when the villain in a book isn’t a villain at all, but a place or a situation that our beloved protagonist has to navigate.

That’s why I’m going to pick Mars. Mars is the best villain ever.  What other villain could cause so many problems by simply existing?

Do you have a favorite villain or villain type?

I have to say I like the “villains” you can love to hate. Like Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice, or Mr Elton in Emma. Or Dickens’ Uriah Heep. It’s interesting that Jane Austen was a vicar’s daughter and all her curates and vicars are lickspittles and creepers. One wonders what her father was like…

You made me look up a word! Also, based on your reference points, I think you must have been reading a lot of classics lately.

Lately I’ve been reading a lot of mystery fluff. I found a highschool “parallel reading” list at a young age, though. I first read Oliver Twist at about age 9 and discovered Dickens. I didn’t really appreciate Austen until I was over 30, though–as a kid I read P and P on a kid’s level and didn’t see the humour.
