This is my first ever Coffee Talk.  I’m shamelessly stealing this idea from Daenel over at Living Outside the Stacks. She does her own Coffee Talk each week, and I love it.

Basically, this will be a place where I can just talk about some of the cool things going on this week. Maybe I saw something cool in the news, or we can talk about the latest episode of a TV show I love.  We’ll see where it goes.

Night Vale

I finally got around to starting the Welcome to Night Vale podcast. I’m loving it. I tried to explain it to my husband, who loves to listen to A Prairie Home Companion each week, as a sci-fi News from Lake Wobegon, in the desert.  I’ve been hearing about it for ages, and I knew it would be good, but the book coming out was the push I needed to start the series.

Deadpool

The Deadpool movie has been out for weeks and I still haven’t seen it.  This is because I have an irrational fear of going to the movie theatre. The smell of buttered popcorn actually makes me nauseous. Thanks anxiety.

New Computer

I had to replace my computer last weekend.  On Friday evening my old laptop was working fine. I walked away for a bit and when I came back I had a black screen with a single line of white text telling me that “The Operating System cannot be found.” Fortunately, a hard restart solved the problem, but it’s a sign that the hard drive is going to crash soon.  Better to go ahead and replace the computer, so that I can still move my files myself. I don’t want to have to have the IT guys try to save my files after the hard drive crashes.

My new laptop is an Asus. I’m pleased with the specs. It has a 2 TB hard drive capacity, 2.5 gigahertz Intel 6th Generation Core i7 processor, 12 GB of RAM and a 15.6″ touch screen. The only thing I’m not loving is Windows 10. That is going to take some getting used to.

Windows 10 is a lot easier to use than Windows 8, though, which I got when I had to replace my computer last year! You’ll get used to it, I promise. One of my favourite students has an Asus and she is really pleased with it. She got a real steal on the price, too.

Don’t feel bad, Andrea. I haven’t been to your actual cinema since the first Bridget Jones movie came out! Back when I was in my twenties, before we even had VCRs here in Spain, and before Spain had 24-hr TV, we used to go to the movies at least twice a week. Then in the 90s it all got weird and suddenly prices shot up and they were cramming so many seats in the houses that I felt like a sardine. Added to that the nosedive in quality of what was on offer, and we started to give it a miss. Now, with DVDs and TV via Internet, it’s easier and more fun to just record selectively from French, English, and Japanese-TV-in-English. If we don’t like something, we just press “Delete” and we haven’t lost a thing.

I am a big fan of Korean drama’s. I absolutely loved Boys Over Flowers. The last time I was in a theatre was in college. I went for a film festival, which was part of a grade for a class. Before that, I saw How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) with a friend of the family. Those are the only 2 movies I’ve seen in a theatre since I got sick at the one when we went to see Encino Man (1992). I should really get over my issue with movie theatres. I mean, I have friends who make movies for a living. It would be nice to see their names in the credits on the big screen.

If you like Korean cinema, have you seen “Three Iron”? Three people have watched it with me, all thought they wouldn’t like it–and they all did. Created quite a few good conversations, too.

I have not seen Three Iron. I will see if I can find it.
