I didn’t get many books finished this month, but I’m still pretty far ahead on my reading challenge.  That’s a good thing, as I may be getting busier with house/farm related things soon.

Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls.

Man Repeller is fashion blogger Leandra Medine‘s memoir about how fashion influenced her life.  It’s been on my TBR list since it was published in 2013, and it’s been sitting on my shelf about that long too.  This book, like Medine’s blog is hilarious and doesn’t hold anything back.

It even makes me want to own a pair of harem pants, though I’m still not sure that anyone but MC Hammer can really pull off the look.

Tik-Tok of Oz

Tik-Tok of Oz is the 8th book in the Oz series by L. Frank Baum.  This book follows the adventures of a shipwrecked girl, the Shaggy Man (who first appeared in Road to Oz), Polychrome (who also appeared in Road to Oz), and Tik-Tok as they travel to the land of the evil Gnome King to save the Shaggy Man’s brother.  Along the way (like in all Oz books) lots of magic, and illogical mischief ensues.  If you’re looking for a quick read that doesn’t require much brain power, an Oz book is a nice place to start.

The Clue of the Tapping Heels

The Clue of the Tapping Heels is Nancy Drew book #16.  This book follows Nancy and her friends as they visit with a woman who is hearing mysterious tapping in her house at night. Once Drew and her friends arrive, it is also discovered that a thief has been stealing the Persian Cats the woman breeds.  There is lots of danger for Nancy along the way, but in true Nancy Drew form, everything comes out all right in the end.

Books I’m Actively Reading

Hopefully you’ll see these books in the finished books section next month.

Omnivore’s Dilemma by Mark Pollan- This book was recommended by the keynote speaker at our Young Farmer’s conference back in January, so even though it’s not my normal type of reading material I decided to give it a try.
Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Crannor- I love the Welcome to Night Vale podcasts, so it was an obvious choice to buy this book when it came out.
The Scarecrow of Oz by L. Frank Baum – You didn’t think I would give up Oz books for too long, did you?

Books I’ve Put Aside and Plan to Finish Later

Let’s be honest. It’s been so long since I started a couple of these they will probably either become DNF (Did Not Finish) books, or I’ll have to start all over. I feel like such a slacker.

The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope
S. by J.J. Abrams

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, it’s hard to find something that can hold my interest. (I am simply mentally tired out, and in serious need of some time off; unfortunately, for me that means no income.) I’ve started and put down several “golden age” mysteries (really from the 20s-30s, or imitating the style), so I decided to change it up and read some non-fiction. I’ve started “Nothing to Envy” about defectors from North Korea and the situation there. Also reading Agatha Christie’s “Come Tell Me How You Live” about her life in Syria with her second husband, an arcaeologist. I was forcibly struck (like when you step on a rake and the handle comes up and raps you smartly on the chin) by the similarity between this book and the “Amelia Peabody” series of “period cosies”, which starts with Crocodile on the Sandbank. That series, like all of them, is a mixture of the very, very good, the mediocre, and the horribly bad.

Harem pants have been all the go here in Spain the last few years, but as you say not everyone can carry them off (so to speak), so now it’s high-waisted pants made of the same soft material but with the crotch in the proper place and a very loose, slightly flared leg. (I asked a couple of women what that kind of pants is called and they raised eyebrows: “Uh….summer pants?” The flipside is “leggins”–ie polyester stretch pants, tight to the ankle, no stirrup (thank goodness, only toddlers should be subjected to stirrup pants, and THEN only with snowboots). Nothing new under the sun, I remember leggins, with a different name, from the 80s. The only difference is the hippy prints.

I wear leggings quite a bit, they are great to wear under dresses in the summer, because they keep my legs from chaffing in the heat and humidity. Plus I never sit like a lady, so it keeps my undies from showing.
