If you could require the next president to read one book, what would it be?

It’s election year here in the US. The two major parties have selected their candidates, and one of them will most likely be the next president.  Last night was the first official debate between the two candidates.  My husband and I set down to watch it, but neither of us were able to sit through the whole thing.  I kept waiting for the candidates to bring each other’s mother into the arguments.  It was like watching a fight on a middle school playground. So, I honestly have to say that the first thing I want to hand both candidates is An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments (by  Ali Almossawi  and illustrated by  Alejandro Giraldo).

Concerning the candidates individually is a little more difficult. But I do think a good start for both of them would be to step into someone else’s shoes.  Perhaps with a book like Loving Day by Mat Johnson.  I haven’t had a chance to read the book yet, but after hearing Johnson’s interview about the book on Fresh Air, it seems like the perfect book to give both of these candidates some real perspective on life outside of privilege.

What book do you think the next president should read?
