It’s a new year and I’m looking forward to all of the reading I will get to do in the next couple of months before baby gets here.  After that, I figure that my reading time will drop dramatically, or that I will end up spending most of my time reading baby books.  That’s not such a horrible thing tho.  Children’s books can be a lot of fun.  And honestly, until she is a little older, I can probably read Spot anything I want and it would have the same effect as a children’s board book.

A Small Fortune

A Small Fortune by Rosie Dastgir was one of the books I started for #ReadTheMargin last month.  It follows Harris Anwar, a Pakistani immigrant to Britain and his extended family, as they navigate relationships across borders and generations.

Anwar’s Muslim sense of responsibility and obligation becomes increasingly incompatible with the modern British way of life he has chosen, so when he comes into some money and decides to use it to help those around him, his small fortune brings a huge cost of its own.

Books I’m Actively Reading

I always seem to be reading more than one book. I’ve got a physical book that I’m reading, an ebook, and a book by my bedside table. Hopefully, you’ll see these books in the finished books section next month.

The Clue of the Leaning Chimney by Carolyn Keene- Nancy Drew mystery #26.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien- I wanted a chance to read my beautiful illustrated version before Spot shows up and tries to eat my books.
The Mystery of the Hidden Room by Marion Harvey – An old locked room mystery.

Your Books

Last month’s #ReadTheMargin challenge has me looking for more books with diverse characters and perspectives. Do you have any books you would recommend?

website hosting and other expenses - like buying more books.

Re your baby being read to…my mother exposed me to all sorts of things. I remember at a very young age listening to the university radio station, they had a programme called “The Book Club” on which a man read aloud for half an hour or so. He had a marvelous flexible voice, could do characters and keep to them, and would read anything, from The House at Pooh Corner to The Hobbit to The Hound of the Baskervilles to Lytton Strachey’s Lives of Eminent Victorians. (Mom did try to keep us from listening to The Gulag Archipelago, however). By age eight I was reading at sixth-grade level and loving literature! So don’t be afraid, read aloud to your baby even in utero–she’ll thank you!

I’m actually reading The Hobbit right now, so I guess I should start reading it aloud to Spot. I’m really thinking that some of the children’s and young adult books that I read, like Nancy Drew and the like would be great for early reading for us. At least until she starts trying to grab at the pages.
