E.N. Scott on his Oliver Orchard Tractor.

It’s harvest season.  That means I’m dealing with my annual bout of itchy eyes and sneezing.  I don’t think I was meant to live in the country, but somehow that’s where I’ve ended up.  That means I’m living on Benedryl and Alaway Allergy Eye Drops.

I’ll use a generic version of Benedryl in a heartbeat, but I absolutely refuse to use any eye drops that are not Alaway.  The work better than anything else I’ve tried and my eye doctor recommended this brand to me, because other brands reduce redness by vasoconstriction (constricting the blood vessels in your eye) and I certainly don’t want that.

Of course allergies aren’t the only issue I’m having this fall.  I also have a teething baby, with a dad who doesn’t get home until late every night because he’s out at the farm bringing in the crop.  I’m making for a lot of late nights, but I suppose I shouldn’t complain to much.  Harvest would take a lot longer if it weren’t for all the big equipment we have now.

Ole’ Fashioned Corn Shuckin’

Shuckin’ corn row by row
The wagon a’catchin every thro’
The ear comes up
Out of the dry rustlin’ shuck
Followed by the eyes
Of the ole brown pups.

Hand shuckin’ beats a machine,
Now don’t you know –
Cause farmer Brown
He done told me so!
Of course they say ‘tis awful slow
Cordin’ to the way
The gasoline motors go.

So maybe some day when
I’ve got money to blow
I’ll get a shuckin’ machine,
Now don’t you know –
Then people won’t call
Me old fashioned no mo’.

Allergies are the WORST! Dealing with allergies on top of the everyday stuff is just horrid. How long does harvest season last for you all? I know that some people are done early on, and others go deep into November, sometimes. And I can’t deal with Benadryl, because I fall asleep immediately and I swear I lose like three days. I will do another allergy medication, but this summer (first time in a LONG time) allergies didn’t get to me too badly.

I’m one of those people that anti-histamines don’t affect. I can take all the Benedryl (or even Nyquil) and it won’t knock me out. Everything is dry around here, so the majority of harvest will probably be over by mid-October. Of course, that’s all subject the the weather. And after harvest is over, quite a few of the farmers around here will till their fields, which means lots of dust in the air. That’s OK tho. I like to eat, so I’ll put up with these allergies.

At least you don’t have to feed itinerant harvesters…ten or twelve men at each meal to cook for and wash up after! I too have been noticing allergies the last few days but here in S. Spain it’s simply lack of rain–too much dust etc in the air.

We are having a lot of dry weather here as well. It’s not helping my allergies either. But you are right, I should be glad that I’m not in charge for meals in the field. Those are no fun to make, and with Mildred, I simply don’t have the time.

Re: allergies, I’m one of theose people that antihistamines carry side effects. For one thing, they really, REALLY aggravate my tinnitus! I was told to find locally-produced honey and eat a tablespoon or two every day. You can put it on toast, stir it into tea or coffee, or just swallow it down as is. I do this year round and I have to say it’s helped a great deal; haven’t needed medical help except on the worst days. It has to be reasonably local because it helps your body acclimatise to the pollens in your area.

I purchased some a few weeks ago, but I haven’t started taking it yet. I really should.
