Sewing seems to have it’s good days and it’s bad days around here. Some days, I manage to finish my last piece of stitching just before my bobbin run out, other times, I end up with a machine malfunction and a quilt stuck in the machine.

This was a quilt stuck in the machine sort of week. That’s OK though, It was the featherweight, so I was actually able to fix it myself, thanks to the lovely people in the Featherweight Facebook Group.

I was even able to finish quilting and bind Mil’s baby quilt. It’s been pieced and sitting next to my sewing machine in the basement for over two years, so when I realized that the whole sewing-with-kid thing was going to work, I brought it up and got it basted. The quilting went really quickly for it, even though I backed the quilt in minky. Seriously… what was I thinking?

I also finished the baby quilt for my niece who is due in October. I’ll be sharing both finished quilts soon.

What have you been sewing lately?

I have two partly-finished quilt tops in the works, and I realise I’ll have to finish them and probably call it quits, as it gets harder and harder to find quilting fabric I can actually afford since our local quilt store closed last year. (I hate the way women do business in my city. She lied to her customers, said she was “moving the shop upstairs” where it used to be, and then just vanished. She even sold the building.) Also it struck me that in 3 years I’ll be 60. No wonder I am so near-sighted these days! I had hoped to buy some flannel squares for a quilt as you go project, but golly–they are expensive on Spain’s internet! And of course ordering from the US you pay as much again in postage and handling.
Then there’s the crazy quilt that I hoped to quilt in the hoop this month. One thing led to another and I haven’t. Partly because it’s so heavy and hot! I never thought 3 layers of cloth (scraps, foundation fabric and backing) would be so darn heavy on my lap but it sure is! Somehow (and I know nothing of science so I have no explanation) it’s heavier than a quilt with batting in the middle. I should have tied it, but I’ve already quilt-stitched several blocks, so I guess I’ll have to carry on.
I expect not to have any work next month so I will drag out the quilting frame and set it up. It’s a Q-snap, which is not what I wanted, but someone gave it to me years back. It takes up a lot of space! Since I learned to pull up Youtube on the tablet, I can listen to music or radio theatre while I quilt.

With Milli around, I’ve been listening to nursery rhymes and children’s songs while I work, but it makes her happy and is allowing me to get some sewing done.
