I’ve taken a short break from working on my spooky fall quilt this week to do a baby quilt for my sister. She’s due to have a baby in a couple weeks, so I really needed to get her quilt done. I’d already done one quilt for her oldest, so I wanted to keep the same sort of feel for this baby.

I picked up some great gender neutral fabric for her quilt from a local fabric store and got to work.

The great thing about working with a charm pack is that I was able to get a scrappy look for this quilt without having to purchase LOTS of excess fabric, and it saves on cutting. All I had to cut for this quilt were the burgundy squares to go with the charm squares. There were 42 squares in my charm pack and I used 40 of them to make 80 half-square triangle blocks.

After this, it was just a question of piecing the blocks together and adding a border — oh yea, and making sure that I had the right shade of thread to quilt the top. I’ll be sharing photos of the finished quilt of Friday.

By the way, I do not recommend using your floor to lay out a quilt design while both your cat and tiny human are in the house. I had to put it back together multiple times.

I have 2 charm packs that are the same. They’ve been sitting on my chest of drawers for long time waiting for me to figure out what to do with them.

There are tons of great ideas for charm pack quilts on Pinterest. I love working with them because it can give me a scrappy and cohesive look in one shot. Plus there’s the fact that you don’t have to cut out 40 or so squares. My personal favorite thing to do with charm packs are to make no-waste Half-Square Triangles (you’ll get 2 of the same size from each pair of fabrics — There are just so many things that you can do with them.

That is one beautiful quilt! I haven’t sewn a stitch because we’re still having temps of around 100ºF. They say the temp will drop this weekend but they’ve said that every weekend for the past month and a half. Sigh.

Oh Andrea, the burgundy fabric is an excellent gender-neutral fabric. So many possibilities with HSTs. I am sure the quilt will be used for a very long time and loved forever.
P.S. You need a design wall, girlfriend!!!

I have a design wall in my real sewing space, but I can’t really work in my basement with the tiny human in tow, so I’ve been having the improvise.

Ha! Yes I bet you had to put together that arrangement a few times. Oh well, the result is worth it. That’ll make a nice baby quilt. Wonderful that it will match the older sibling’s quilt. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
