I’ve wanted to have a Little Free Library since I first heard about them a few years ago. But something has always seemed to be in the way of having one – the biggest issue was having a location. I live in a heavily trafficked area, which is good for a LFL, but being on the side of a highway, might make it a little too heavily trafficked for most people to feel comfortable stopping to have a look at the available books.
But I’m happy to report that I’ve come up with solution, at least a temporary one. I’ve put up my very own Little Free Library outside my office at the University. It has it’s down-sides, only being open/accessible when the offices are open during the week, but it does get a lot of foot traffic, and a couple books have already been taken.
I’m hoping that more books will be changed out soon, with the addition of my official looking LFL sign. Maybe, I’ll even register the library some day. In the mean time, I’m starting with some of the books I’ve recently finished reading and hoping to eventually bring in a wide assortment of books for those around me to discover.
Have you ever used a Little Free Library? What type of books would you want to see in one?
Back in the 70s my local library just had a table (or sometimes a shopping cart) labelled “Take One, Leave One.” Some people took without leaving, some left without taking, so it all worked out.
I used to do the used book run down to the Costa del Sol every year or so and I have a few I’d like to trade in at a used bookshop but a) I don’t know if it’s still there and b) I’d have to be able to afford the train tickets and meals for two, as it’s an allday excursion. We’d leave at about 7 AM and get back around 10 PM.
That sounds like a lot of fun! So far my LFL has only had books taken, but I’m perfectly OK with that. I love that someone, even if I don’t know who it is, is getting enjoyment out of books that would otherwise sit collecting dust.
