It’s election day here in the US of A. I got up a little early and went to vote. Have you?
Funny thing… I wasn’t aware that I was voting for half of the items that were on the ballot. Now, I knew about the special referendum on Capping Property Taxes (I think this is a bad idea, since the assessor can still raise your property value, you’re taxes can and will still go up); but there were several races I didn’t know I was going to need to vote for. They were all state races, like “State Treasurer”, but I felt bad for not knowing anything about the candidates. Of course, it hard to take time to learn about the candidates, when you don’t even know that you’re supposed to be voting on the position in the election. I’m pretty sure that makes me a major slacker… so I did some party line voting there, but I really do like to vote for people based on who they are, and what they stand for, not for their affiliation.
If you are an American, it is your right to vote (unless you’re a convicted felon, of course) so go out and vote. Otherwise, I don’t want to hear you complain that you don’t like what the government is doing.
Even if Mr. Ziller (my US History teacher) instilled in me the notion that an elected representative is a representative of all of the people in his or her district, regardless of whether or not they voted… I know that said representative will represent the majority of people that elected him… which means, if you disagree with those people, you’d better go cancel out their votes.
What are you waiting for? Go! Now! Vote!
Then come back and tell me what you thought of the voting process this year. Did you have to wait in line, are you tired of the people standing outside of polling stations telling you to vote for specific candidates? (I actually almost changed my vote and voted against my preferred candidate, because when I walked in, someone told me that he appreciated my vote… I hate when people do things like that).
