It’s not fall yet, but that doesn’t mean I’m not ready for it.  I found an amazing knit poly from Missoni at my local fabric shop and it needed to be a dress.  The fabric comes in at least half a dozen colorways, but I finally decided on the pink and green colorway which is full of fabulous fall tones.

Because the fabric is a sheer and loose knit, I underlined the entire dress in nude swimsuit lining.  It keeps my undies from showing through and adds an extra layer of warmth which will be great for those long walks across campus.

The dress is a variation of the skater dress, with long sleeves + a couple inches because of my long monkey arms and an extended skirt.  I do think that out and about this probably needs a belt or sash of some sort to break up the pattern of  fabric, but otherwise it’s just about perfect.

This is very pretty and I think it has great lines without a belt! How did you like working with the knit and the underlining? How about the neck band and cuffs? This knit fabric enthusiast wants to know! 🙂

I’m glad to have the underlining for this dress because this fabric didn’t like my sewing machine much and it allowed me to do most of the sewing with the underlining next to the feed dogs and presser foot. I think the whole project would have been much easier with a serger. The bands were pretty easy to work with on this fabric. They’re a great stretch elastic bias that my local fabric shop carries in tons of colors. If I were to make this again I might just skip lining the dress fabric (because it made it REALLY warm) and wear a slip underneath instead.

Every project is a learning experience (at least, for me). It’s great that yours came out pretty!

If it hadn’t, I’d have hacked it up and started over. Too pretty of fabric not to use it on something gorgeous.
