Just a little house cleaning for the 1st book post of the year. I’m changing the title from Booklr Questions to Bookish Questions, because booklr is very specific to Tumblr, and I want to be more inclusive with these posts. Also, if you have a bookish question for me, be sure to ask.

Now for this week’s question!

Would you rather read any ending that makes you feel happy or sad?

I love a happy ending. I mean, who doesn’t?  But sometimes what a book really needs is a sad ending.  I think it’s more important to me that books have an ending that feels finished. Don’t leave me with a cliffhanger, or wondering what happens next unless you plan to write a sequel.

Do you like your endings happy or sad?

I much prefer a happy ending. Or at least a satisfying one…even if it means that the baddy gets their just desserts. Recently I’ve read several books that have endings that seemed patched on, like the author was waaay over their deadline and maybe the publisher was threatening them with legal action or something. Or it just feels like they got tired of writing it and stuck on an end any old how. I really felt this with the end of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”–the business of the recordings felt like such a cop-out.

I haven’t read A Handmaiden’s Tale, though I really enjoyed Stone Mattress, her book of short stories. Maybe that’s why I have been enjoying books of short stories so much. Lots of good endings.
