I feel a bit like a slacker because I didn’t write up a Book It! post last month, but then again, I didn’t finish any books last month. It was the first time in two years that I didn’t finish any books during a whole month. I blame motherhood. The lack of alone time is staggering.
I did finish a book this month though! Only one, but it’s a start. Hopefully, I’ll get a little more time to read in December, with the holiday break and everything.
A Wind in the Door
A Wind in the Door is the 2nd book in Madeleine l’Engle’s Wrinkle in Time Trilogy or Quintet (depending on who you ask). It follows the continuing adventures of Meg Murray, her little brother Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin O’Keefe. In this book, Meg is the main character again, this time trying to save her brother’s life with the help of a cherubim, a farandolae, and Calvin.
Needless to say, it’s an interesting story. I read the book as a child, but had forgotten most of the specifics, so it was nice to pick the book up again. l’Engle always describes her characters beautifully, and in this book, I absolutely loved her depictions of the farandolae and cherubim. It made the creatures easy to visualize, which I always find important when writing about fantastic creatures.
This book, like the last one, has lots of religious overtones about the greater purpose of life, and God, but I enjoy that aspect of these books. I think that it’s particularly useful tool to introduce children to some of the more complicated aspects of religion and life, in general.
Books I’m Actively Reading
Hopefully, you’ll see these books in the finished books section next month.

Yes. Reading is like breathing for me, an essential that I just do, I don’t usually think about. I have decided that there’s not much likelihood of breaking last years “read” record, but then there’s no need to compete with a number. Having decided to read a bit more non-fiction, I have discovered that they tend to be a bit longer or at least slower to read than novels. More free time over the holidays means more reading gets done, if you’re me. I don’t think I can top last year’s total (240) but I don’t expect to.
