A Hot 4th of July

It’s always hot out on the 4th of July, and this year was definitely not an exception. Matt (my husband) went out to the fairgrounds bright and early at 8 am and didn’t make it home until 11 pm. That morning he helped the fireworks people get set up, before helping with some electrical issues around lunchtime. I showed up at about 2:00 to bring him some Gatorade, but I only lasted about half an hour in the 105-degree heat before I had to give up and head back home for a while. I guess I’m just not made for the hot weather we’re having… or maybe I would be if I didn’t work in an air-conditioned office all day. Air conditioning is an amazing invention, I’m so glad that we have it! We definitely could not go about our day without air conditioning let’s be honest.

I came back out about 5:00 in the evening, at which point it had cooled down to about 98 degrees. For some reason that was much more managable the 105. It probably had more to do with the fact that I got to ride in the air conditioned semi with Matt, while he was watering the infield. Matt, Uncle Dave and Alan – the fairboard president, along with the local fire department spent most of the afternoon watering down the infield so that if any sparks did hit the ground from the fireworks, that nothing would catch fire. This was the first time they’ve ever done this, but it’s also the first time they’ve done fireworks in a drought this bad.

The fireworks ended up being quite pretty, even if it was hot and dry.
