I originally found this recipe in the 2012 Land O Lakes holiday cookies publication. One reason I love this publication is that it has great tips, like what to do when you want to make spritz cookies and don’t have a cookie press. Did you know you could use an icing bag with a large star tip and pipe a 2-inch circle? Me neither! Another thing I love is that these cookies make amazing gifts, and are a great winter version of those wonderful buttery spritz cookies.

Spiced Spritz with Browned Butter Glaze
Ingredients
Cookies
- 1 cup butter softened
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 1/4 cups flour
Glaze
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
Cookies
-
Heat oven to 400 degrees.
-
Place butter in large bowl and beat at medium speed for about 30 seconds.
-
Add sugar, pie spice, baking soda, and salt.
-
Continue beating, scraping the bowl occasionally, until well mixed.
-
Add egg and vanilla, beating well.
-
Add flour and beat until well mixed.
-
Place dough in press and press cookies onto cookies sheets, 2 inches apart.
-
Bake 5-8 minutes. Edges of cookies should be set, but not browned.
-
Remove to wire rack and cool completely.
Glaze
-
Once cookies are cool, melt butter for glaze in heavy saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking, stirring constantly and watching closely until butter just starts to turn golden (3-5 minutes).
-
Immediately remove butter from heat and cool slightly.
-
Combine browned butter and powdered sugar in medium bowl. Add vanilla and enough milk for desired glaze consistency.
-
Drizzle over cooled cookies.
