Meringue Skirt Refresh

During a recent Virtual Craft Night, I was looking through my box of trims (yes, I have an entire box of trims) and came across some vintage lace from my grama’s stash.  There was an entire roll of the stuff –  maybe 6 or 8 yards (no I didn’t measure, it just looked like a lot).  All I knew was that I just had to make something with it – too bad I didn’t know what that something was.

So went over to my fabric drawers and looked around.  I didn’t have a lot of neutrals, but I did have 3 different shades of pink cotton broadcloth – I have no idea why.  I almost never use pink.  But, I guess that was about to change.  After trying them out together, I decided on what I would have called the middle pink.  It wasn’t terribly pale, or terribly bright.  It was a great dusty rose shade that looked amazing as a background for the lace.

I just didn’t have a lot of it.  In total there was a yard of fabric.  What could I make with a yard?  Inspiration hit.  I could make a great a-line skirt if I made a few adjustments to my Meringue Skirt pattern from Colette Patterns.

I laid my front panel out of a fold and cut it, but I had to divide the back panel down the middle to get the yardage I needed.  It’s a good thing broadcloth isn’t directional.  Side note: If you do this to a pattern, don’t forget to add a seam allowance in.  I’m really glad I remembered. Once I had my pieces cut out I attached a row of lace to the bottom of each panel.  After that it was a simple matter of following the regular pattern instruction, tho with the change in cutting I did put the zipper in the back center instead of at the side of the waist.

So here it is, my refreshed version of the Meringue Skirt.

The best part?  It only took about half an hour to make, and I ended up with a great addition to my wardrobe.
