Have you met any authors?

I haven’t met any famous authors. As much as I love to read, I’ve never been one for going out of the way to meet authors of the books I love. Maybe it’s because I don’t live near a large city, where most book signings are held, but it’s more likely I watched too much Murder, She Wrote with my grandmother when I was little and just feel like authors have too many other things going on in their life to worry about meeting me. Plus, it seemed that lots of people died when Jessica Fletcher was around.

jen-teachenorHowever I have been the official photographer when University graduate and author of Beautiful Life, Jen Teachenor, spoke at the University last December.

Piper KermanI’m also looking forward to attending a book talk with Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black for EVPL’s One Book One Community event this year.

That’s super cool! He has to be a great guy if he’s half as nice at Jen.

Way back in the late 60s or early 70s I met Margeurite Henry, the author of “the horse books” that were so popular with girls in my school. I was about 8, and the lady was so nice, she asked me which one was my favourite and then asked me to tell her about it–as if she hadn’t written it herself! She asked me to read a bit aloud as well–I was already reading well above my age level, and was learning to read aloud to my mother, who was in bed with a slipped disc. The librarian didn’t tell me who she was until after! I suppose they were afraid that I would freeze and go all shy (fat chance! not the me I was then) or perhaps ask for an autograph.

That’s really cool. I remember writing a letter to Tomie dePaola, author and illustrator of Strega Nona and other great children’s books, when I was in the 1st grade. I was so excited when I received a personalized letter back.
