Do you read ‘classics’?
I don’t read anywhere near enough classic books, not since school. I’ve been too busy reading all the great new books coming out.
Thanks to all of the free classics available for my Kindle app, I am trying to do a better job of reading them. I read several classic era books in December, and recently finished reading Cabbages and Kings by O. Henry.
I’d love to know what classics you think I should read. Do you have a favorite classic?
With me it’s more a question of a favourite work by classic authors. My favourite Austen novel, for example, is Mansfield Park, not P & P. I haven’t read Dickens for a long time, but I did like Oliver Twist! I don’t know how many times I’ve read Little Women and Eight Cousins. I can live without Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, but give me Charlotte Bronte’s “Villette” every time.
But if someone asked me, “Which classic book would you like to live in?” it would have to be Eight Cousins, or The Secret Garden. That big old quiet house on the edge of the moors, with a huge library full of books and a garden…yum.
I could live in The Secret Garden, too. Though, I think the classic that had the most affect on me was Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles. I haven’t read it since high school, but it was very meaningful at the time.
I just finished The Little Princess again. Love the imagery of the attic being transformed.
This is one that I haven’t read. I’ll be sure to add it to my list.
So true…must read it again!
