It was another slow month for reading, but I starting a little quilting project over the weekend, so I’ll be bringing that to you later this week.  In the meantime, let’s talk book.  I finished one traditional novel and two books of short stories this month.

Second Foundation

I finished Second Empire, the last book in Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy early this month.  I love the way it ended and will probably read the other Foundation books as I have time.  You can see my review of the other books in the series in last month’s Book It! post.

The King in Yellow

The King in Yellow

The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers isn’t the type of book I would normally read, I ended up really enjoying this collection of short stories. The one thing I wasn’t sure about was how some of the stories were connected to “The King in Yellow,” as my understanding was that all the short stories would be connected somehow. The first few had obvious connections, but the connections became sparse as I got further into the book. Regardless of that, I did enjoy them for what they were.  If you enjoy old literature, I recommend that you give it a try.

My Man Jeeves

I finally finished reading this book. Yea!  It wasn’t bad, but I felt the whole time like I was listening to some old man at the nursing home telling me about the good old days.  That is, assuming the good old days were in the late 1800s.  Overall the stories are interesting, but I certainly preferred the BBC’s take with their series Wooster and Jeeves.

Books I’m Actively Reading

Hopefully, you’ll see these books in the finished books section next month.

Artemis Fowl by Eion Colfer- This is the book that I’m reading in the evenings before bed. It’s been quite interesting, but I’m so tired by the end of the day that I haven’t been reading much.
Say You’re One of Them by Uwem Akpan- December is #ReadTheMargins month, meaning that I’m going to try to read books which have been written by minority authors featuring minority characters.  This book has been in my TBR pile for a while and being a book of short stories about African children by an African author, #ReadTheMargins was a perfect excuse to get it out of the stack.

Books I’ve Put Aside and Plan to Finish Later

Let’s be honest. It’s been so long since I started a couple of these they will probably either become DNF (Did Not Finish) books, or I’ll have to start all over. I feel like such a slacker.

The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope
S. by J.J. Abrams

I do that sometimes…start a book and it just doesn’t appeal…sometimes I go back and just tear through it thinking, “Why didn’t I persevere?” and other times, I find out I was right to put it down the first time.

A year or so ago I read “The Briefcase” aka “Strange Weather in Tokyo” by Hiromi Kawakami, and while it was OK and moving in spots it was also just plain weird and depressing in other spots. Talked to one of my favourite students about it and her face expressed total disbelief at my tepid reaction. She lent me the Spanish translation and I discover it’s a lot better than the English version. So I live, I learn–or at any rate, I live!

I don’t know if you’ll see this…but it just happened. This summer I tried to read Tove Jansson’s “The Summer Book” and didn’t get through the first chapter. I don’t know why. Yesterday I picked it up and tore through half of it, reading today until I got a headache, finishing it in less than 24 hrs (and I did things in between like cook and shop and clean house and walk a considerable distance). Loved it.

The brain is a strange place.

      It certainly is.
