What book has your favorite cover art?

For me, the cover art of a book is a big deal, especially if it’s a book I love.  I think it’s the artist in me. I want to have a beautiful copy of my book that I can display, and that really conveys the atmosphere of the book. For me, that involves a simple list of criteria:

  1. Not a photo. For me, unless the book is a biography or non-fiction book, a photo is just not the right solution for a cover.  Invest in some art instead of giving me some anonymous lady in a dress.
  2. It should be a hardback. Don’t get me wrong, I own plenty of paperback books, but if it’s a book I love and plan to go back to, I want to have a hardback version.
  3. I prefer the art to be on the hardcover, not just the dust jacket. And honestly, if you want to get rid of the dust jacket, that’s fine by me.  Most of my favorite books don’t have them.

So what are my favorites?

I can’t get over the beauty of the Discworld Hardback Library from Orion Publishing – the Gollancz imprint.  I personally own copies of Good Omens and the entire Death Collection, which includes: Mort, Reaper Man, Soul Music, and Hogfather.  Because these are British editions, if you would like a copy, you will most likely need to go through the Book Depository.  Don’t worry, though. The prices are great, and they do free shipping worldwide.

I also love the Barnes and Noble Collectible Editions.  They are a great (and inexpensive) way to get beautiful copies of some classic novels, and series, along with a few of the newer popular books.  I personally love that I have one book that holds the entire Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy collection and that it has the words “Don’t Panic” in large friendly letters on the back.

What about you?  What kind of cover art do you like?
