I’m super excited to have made progress on the baby communique quilt again. I was able to piece a backing from all of the leftover bits of the fabric I had purchased to make the front. I crumb pieced all of the leftover bits of fabric from the front into sections and added the uncut fabric to get a nice big backing. I somehow managed to only have selvage strips when I was done. Woohoo! Hopefully I’ll actually get around to quilting it sometime soon.
I’ve also been doing some hand sewing during lunches at the office lately. And the result of that is a completed set of 12 fish for Mil’s magnetic fishing game I’m planning to give her for Christmas. I just have a hole to drill in my dowel rod and a bucket to pick up for the fish to live in.
Are you planning on any handmade gifts for Christmas?

As we get older, we give each other “unit gifts”, like the time two years ago when I gave us a new mattress. Hoping for new pillows this year, proper Spanish pillows that fit in our pillowcases, as the pillows I bought in Costco are too big and not very good. “Memory foam” my right hind foot.
Thanks for encouraging me to try piecing backing. I don’t have much work at all this year, so money for extras is non-existent. Our local quilting shop closed last year, leaving one shop that makes expensive clutch bags etc out of Japanese fabrics and sells them by the yard if you’re budgeted for that (which I’m not). I realise that I probably won’t be making many quilts for us now, but I do have some fabric to use up, so I decided to try child quilts for the Little Sisters of the Cross to distribute. I can tie them, though I personally don’t care for tied quilts, but it would be quicker and probably just as good. The problem was–backing fabric. If a “crumbed” backing is as I think, pieced all anyhow out of what you’ve got, that would work. Then I’d only have to think about batting.
Please do a post about how you piece backing fabric.
I will try to get a post up about how I do mine, but in the meantime, you might check out this tutorial — https://www.alandacraft.com/2017/09/08/crumb-quilt-technique-tutorial/.
How cute are those fish?! She’ll love this gift.
What an adorable fishing game! She is simply going to love it. What a great mom you are. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
Love your jewel toned fish. That’s going to be a very fun Christmas gift. I don’t normally make gifts for Christmas, the holiday is stressful enough!
That’s why I’m working to do everything early this year.
Oh those fish are so cute! What a great idea!
Thank you! I’m excited to give it to her.
