In the last week, with the cold weather moving in, I’ve been avoiding my sewing space. It’s in the basement, and it’s awfully cold down there. But I didn’t want to be a complete slacker, so I’ve been doing some handwork instead.
I have two blocks for my latest crazy quilt that are “finished.” I might still get inspiration or a whim to add something else, but they could be complete as they are. That’s part of the problem with crazy quilting. You can always add more.
Each of the blocks I have made so far will finish at 8″. It’s a great size for me to sit on the couch and work on a block while I cuddle under a quilt and catch up on my latest TV shows.
Aside from my 2 finished blocks, I have also pieced a 3rd block. (I did go down to my sewing area to do that.)
I’m glad to have a block to work on this week, in case it doesn’t get any warmer. Do you work on different types of projects when it’s cold?

Now, there: you’ve inspired me again. As you know I want to start work on a crazy quilt…well seeing your BVM block reminded me of a piece of fabric with manger-scene figures printed on it, as well as (for some reason) St Anthony of Padua. I was gifted it by someone years and years ago and have long wondered what I could use it for. Shazam! Now I know!
That’s your good deed for the day covered! Thanks!
I absolutely love using panels and odd prints like that for the centers of these blocks. It makes for such an intriguing starting point. And did you see that you got several comments on your quilt? I’m not the only one that likes it. 🙂
Hi Andrea, it looks absolutely gorgeous! I suppose I never would have enough patience to finish such a project!!! Kind regards, Annett
Thank you Annett! I never thought I would have enough patience to finish this type of project either, and this will be my 3rd crazy quilt. It is definitely worth the time it takes, and a great way to learn patience.
I can imagine that CQing could be addictive, esp since you can use up all kinds of scraps that are “too small to use, too big to toss” or tiny bits that you hate to part with because they’re your favourite or just so pretty. I have a box of like 1 in squares someone gave me, now I know I can use them for this, even with seam allowance.
Thanks for stopping by again Anna! Because I sew my fabrics to a foundation square when I CQ, I often only use an 1/8 inch seam, which gives me even more use out of those tiny scraps!
I have to admit, crazy quilt making looks FUN. 🙂 I’ve never tried it yet. I really like your Madonna block.
Thanks so much Lynette. Crazy quilting is my favorite kind of quilting. It’s lots of fun to add all those little details.
Oh boy what you started Andrea!! LOL In the past 2 days I have finished three, 12-inch CQ blocks using my “Navidad” fabric and scraps. This is soooo addictive! (I don’t ever work this fast!) DH took one look and said, “That’s pretty–this quilt is for US!” because I tend to make gifts of my best work. If I don’t have enough panels to make a bed quilt I will make CQ squares using some of my favourites–I can cut “scraps” as easy as not!
I’m SO excited for you! Are there pictures somewhere? I’d love to see them!
No pictures yet, I don’t have a digital camera (or any other kind). My cell is a “dumb phone”–you know, it rings and sends texts and that’s about it. Maybe I can get one of my students to snap a couple of the squares for me.
Don’t feel bad, I have a dumb phone too. My husband doesn’t see the need for me to have a smart phone. He says that I have internet at work and home. That should be plenty.
