After a previous “finish” of a throw sized quilt from my Communique fabric panel, I decided that the quilt looked so nice that I really wanted a larger quilt that I could use on the bed. After all, I have a dozen or so throw sized quilts already. Why not make something that I could use on the bed.

So I set about drawing an expansion of the quilt from my finished 54×72 quilt into a king size bed quilt of 102×96.

And with the expansion figured out, I started piecing. First I added the sections directly above and below the original quilt top. Mouse was pleased with the extra fabric.

From there, I spent about 2 weeks piecing the two side panels.

I got them finished and sewn on this weekend.  And the final quilt top is huge! It takes up entire living room floor.

I’m pretty happy with how the top came out. Now I just have to decide what to do for backing.

Wow…and you say my quilts have a lot of work in them! My goodness. I’ve never tried a Log Cabin type motif. Beautiful fabrics, I am so envious.

My friend loved the Dresden Plate quilt–as God would have it, the colours in the fabric picked up the colours in her curtains. So we’re both pleased. Different strokes, huh?

I have sewn the blocks for my friend’s baby quilt and am about to sew the strips together. I skipped sashing and posts, just the scrappy triangles and then I’ll put a border on it. I am blessed with a hubby with an excellent eye for colour, so when I get stuck I ask him what he thinks. This time when I laid all the blocks out on the floor (no design walls here–they don’t sell flannel sheeting anymore) in the approximate order I thought, he only changed one or two.

It’s so hot here (45ºC this weekend) that sitting around quilting is really all I’m up to.

I’m so glad that your friend loved her quilt. The log cabin motif was fun. It was a great way to use up some of my smaller scrappy pieces of fabric, and using the different sized blocks made for a really fun composition.

I love this quilt, Andrea! I like the straight lines, I am always drawn to this type of quilt.

    This is fantastic!

Thank you! I thought this might be just the inspiration you needed to keep to a minimal color palette. I find that hard myself, but I’m always pleased with the results when I do it.

So interesting that you chose to expand an earlier project. The consistent color palette completely blends the two sections of the project, and I would never have guessed it was not done in one go.

Thanks Lori! I have to admit that the transition from it’s original throw size to deciding it would be a good idea to turn it into a bed quilt was only about a week, so I already had all of my fabrics in those color palettes out and ready to go. Thanks for stopping by (and I really am looking forward to seeing your version of a scrappy quilt).
