I’m very excited to share my latest finish with all of you! A brand new king size bed quilt! I finished piecing the top ages ago, but it just recently made it’s trip to the long arm quilter. I got it back in July, just before our move, so I didn’t get around to binding the quilt until last week.
My quilter added a nice overall pattern to the quilt, which works well this this scrappy quilt.
I pieced strips for the back of this quilt, using up almost all of my left over fabric.
This was nice for me, because it allowed me to use up many smaller pieces of fabric that I had on hand, instead of having to spend money on more backing fabric. And, it also means that this quilt is double sided, so I can flip it either direction I want on our bed.
This quilt was designed on simple graph paper into blocks of varying sizes, some which contained fussy cut pieces from a panel. Each block was then pieced as a scrappy log cabin (excluding some 4″ blocks, which were solid, 4-patch, or HSTs). The overall quilt finishes at 96″x100″, which makes it a perfect fit for our king sized bed. With the panel as the focal fabric, I matched up a wide selection of fabrics from all the local quilt shops, as well as from my stash, to give the quilt a scrappy look.
What is your latest quilting finish? Do you prefer to make scrappy quilts, or quilts with more structured color layouts?

I don’t have a lot of options, though I do have a small fabric stash, most inherited from other people. I like to try to make what I’ve got work, maybe purchasing a yard or three to make it go toghether. I figure it makes my brain work a little harder, too.
I’m working “steadily” (so to speak) on the Storm at Sea quilt. A friend is visiting from the US on Friday and has promised to bring me a pot of Fabric Mod Podge–golly I hope she remembers!
I also just found a pattern that I had been told was “Dove in the Window”. Well, I saw it online titled “Jared Takes a Wife.” I felt like one of the Peanuts gang as I sat in front of the monitor and yelled, “THAT’S IT!” and DH very nearly tumbled head-over-heels in the best Peanuts fashion!! I am schooling myself to finish the Storm top before I pull fabrics to see if I can make Jared.
All my life I’ve outline quilted around each piece (by hand, for me that’s the fun part). I am seriously considering doing circles on the crazy quilt if I ever get it done!
The Jared Takes a Wife block looks fun (I had to go look it up). I could see why you’d want to jump into it. Email me your address sometime, and I’ll be happy to send you some scraps next time I go through my fabrics.
I’m on it like a bonnet!!
You’re so adorable!
Great quilt. I struggle with scrappy. I’m such a control freak and like to know exactly what’s going where
Thanks Gina! I’m exactly the opposite with my quilts. I like to just be able to pull from a pile of fabrics and move blocks around until they look good.
Beautiful. It has all my favorite colors in it. Congrats on getting it back from being quilted.
Thanks Jennifer! Getting it back from being quilted is a big deal, since the wait list for my quilter is over a year. I had actually forgotten that she had me on the list, so I was glad I had a project in the pile in need of quilting.
This is excellent! Such a nice scrappy success. The fussy cuts here and there are a lot of fun. The back is just as nice to use as the front. My mother worked at a company named Communique, and she would have loved this.
Thanks Lynette. I actually chose to call this quilt “Communique” because that was the name of the fabric line that the fussy cut panel pieces came from.
Lovely quilt; it turned out fantastic! The design and colors are great!
Thank you Penny. I had a lot of fun making the quilt, and am really enjoying having it on my bed now.
[…] This is the completed top for my king-size bed quilt. […]
Andrea, do you have this pattern for a queen sized quilt? I wondered if I could just use the center for a queen sized quilt. I like the pattern so much and have washed all my fabrics. I have the updated layout. I saw the brown and beige quilt. this quilt looks different than the pattern I have. Please explain the difference.
Do you have instructions for this quilt. I have looked but can’t find them. I am so excited to get started. Thank you for your help. Sue
For my version of the quilt, I pieced my larger blocks into log cabins instead of using solid blocks, but you can also do it as a solid block. There are some examples where people have done this here: http://mouseinmypocket.com/making/quilts/communique-quilts/. The center section of this king-size quilt is the throw quilt size which is 60×72-inches, so it will not be as large as you want for a queen bed (you can check out standard sizes here.), but you can add solid bordered around the throw size to get the drape you need.
Are there partial seams in this quilt? There are several areas where I just can’t figure out how to put these together. Thanks
